The Cartoon

Remarks

This was my first strip, the one that started it all off. We're introduced to Sarge, the protagonist of the series, and visually at least to the four worms in his care (later to be named Howard, Frank, George and Timothy). It seems from the start that Sarge has known these four for a long while and that they are very ill-versed in the art of worm warfare. They prove this by finding it difficult to master even the prod, with the last frame showing them either standing too far back, facing in the wrong direction, picking their nose and even being knocked flying by the sandbag on its return arc!

Transcript

(1) SARGE: Right men, I think I've finally found a weapon you can use without mucking it up...
(2) SARGE: ... the Prod!
(3) SARGE: (goes up to sandbags) It's very simple. Watch.
(4) Sandbag swings backwards having been prodded. SARGE: Got that?
(5) HOWARD: Uh... we think so, Sarge!
(6) SARGE: Good, now you try.
(7) Assorted chaos occurring in the background. FRANK is standing too far back from the target, waving his hand uselessly and shouting "Work!". TIMOTHY is facing the wrong way. GEORGE has prodded his too hard, and the sandbag has swung back and sent him flying with a "smack!". HOWARD is picking his nose! In the foreground, a resigned SARGE raises his eyebrow to "camera".
