Cartoon No. 11
Title: Exam Practice
Date: 12.12.2003
Frames: 8
Another long gap, this time due to me being at University. Anyway, after some constructive criticism from Worm Mad about the legibility of my lettering, I decided it was time for a slightly different approach to that dark art. All my cartoons up to this point have been drawn solely in pencil, but this is the first one where I've drawn it in pencil then redone parts in biro (notably nearly all the lettering and a lot of the first frame), rubbing out the pencil after I'd done the ink. I certainly think the text looks more legible now, but you decide. Note another use of a recurring theme, the Combat Theory Test. This is also the first Boot Camp cartoon not to feature Sarge - I just thought it would make a nice change to leave out the protagonist and broaden the field of the cartoons. The actual punchline of the joke is quite relevant actually, because it reflects my own attitude to revision and studying >:-).

D'oh! What is it with me and practice/practise?
(1) HOWARD in the bunk-room, playing with his laptop. GEORGE pokes his head around the sime of the frame
(2) TIMOTHY and FRANK are there with GEORGE
GEORGE: Hi, Howard.
HOWARD: Oh, hey guys. What's up?
(3) TIMOTHY: Well, you know our Combat Theory resits are coming up...
(4) FRANK: Yeah, and you got the highest mark last time...
(5) HOWARD: I got 7%
FRANK (Off-frame): Yeah, well, it's all relative...
(6) GEORGE: Anyway, we were wondering if you could give us some hints on studying...
(7) HOWARD: Well, I'll try.
(8) LATER, HOWARD has a poster pinned to the wall with a timetable divided into Gaming Time and Internet Time.
HOWARD: So that's how you divide up your study periods...
