Colonising Mars

Paul Varley and Gareth Owen

Well, hello and welcome. We hope you have fun reading this entry to the competition and enjoy perhaps slightly more light-hearted style than the normal entries. There are many things to consider in a project about colonising Mars, and we pore over them in detail here...

Contents

Why Colonise Mars?First of all, why bother? This is discussed under Why Colonise Mars?, in which we go into detail on mankind's need to explore new places, and Mars in particular.
"Space Elevators"After considering this, our first problem is a way to get there. We have rockets and stuff, but a clever idea which would save energy would be the "Space Elevator". More details on what this is, how it works and why it would be useful - as well as any drawbacks.
AtmosphereAtmosphere plays a big part in defining the characteristics of a planet - from temperature to pressure to likelihood of being hit by a meteorite. Here we compare Mars' atmosphere with Earth's, and see what changes we need to make.
WaterWe find why water's so essential to life, the universe and everything. Also we ask the question "Is there's any water on Mars and if so, can we get at it?"
Introducing LifeOf course, this is what it's all building up to. There's no point in coming this far, adding oceans and a decent atmosphere, if we can't add some life to enjoy the scenery... But which life is best? And at which stages?
Credits and BibliographyI'm sure you're dying to know what books and internet sites we used to do this, not to mention the people who without their help, this project wouldn't have got off the ground.
